Frequently Asked Questions of New Applicants:

Q: What if two teachers from the same school want to apply for service learning funds?

A: More than one teacher from the same school may apply, or the same teacher may submit more than one application.

Q: Are the funds very competitive?

A: No.  The awards are non-competitive. 

Q: I can’t make it to a workshop. Can I still apply for service learning funds?

A: Yes. Read all of the guidelines and request that a Service Learning binder of information be mailed to you.

Q: Is there a maximum or minimum amount of money that I can request?

A: No.  The appropriate amount is determined by the needs and goals of the service learning plan.

Q: Can I use the funds to pay for a speaker or substitute teacher?

A: No.  Funds cannot be used to compensate teachers, guest speakers or trainers.

Q: When are checks awarded?

A: Checks are awarded at the Service Learning Event in September. Checks for service learning plans taking place in the summer are given in May.

Q: Can awards be received to support plans that help causes in another country or other parts of the United States?

A: No. Guidelines state that plans must support a service partner in Southeast Louisiana.

Q: Can I purchase equipment for my school that will help me in carrying out the service learning plan?  For example, we could use a digital camera and laptop computer.

A: No.  Guidelines do not permit the purchase of any equipment for the school.

Q: If I find that I did not request enough money to cover the expenses stated in my budget, can I request additional funds mid-year?

A: No.  Applicants are limited to the original approved award amount.

Q: Can I do the same service learning plan the second year?

A: Yes.  However, the application should not be submitted verbatim but reflect the growth and changes that occurred the first year.

Q: Can I send you a draft to see if I am on the right track?

A: Yes.  We will accept a draft of your application if submitted by February 14, 2017.  We will give you written feedback on your draft application.


Frequently Asked Questions of Returning Applicants:

Q: My plans have changed, do I need approval?

A: Yes.  Please submit a Changes Form.  It may be used to alert us of new information or to request a change in the approved application.

Q: If I do not spend all my money for the year that it was awarded, can I carry it over to the next school year?

A: No.  Money must be spent for the year it was awarded or returned to the Service Learning Program.  It will not impact the amount of money that you want to request the following year.

Q: Do I need to attend a workshop every year?

A: It is not required, but we are glad to have you participate.

Q: If we have money left over, can we give a check to the service partner?

A: No.  Awards cannot be made to an individual or the service partner.  Funds must be returned as stated in the Award Agreement Form signed by your principal.
